I hate action sequences!

Posted by Duchednier Aug. 19, 2009 @ 1:00 PM EDT

And by hate them, i mean hate MAKING them, damn they're fun to watch!

But seriously though, how to people like ryanide come up with stuff like this

This guy's inspirational ;)

But basically, i'm working on an action sequence in exile 4, and as you may be able to tell in past episodes, exile is very action-oriented. If anyone has any tips for making sexy fight scenes i'd love to hear them :)

When I saw Dendyn Dynasties a couple of years ago I remember being really impressed with the fight scenes (well that was the whole animation).
Good luck -- not an animator :P can't help ya out.

Aug. 19, 2009 | 1:44 PM Starogre says:

key out the important frames then just keep adding inbetweens. start with almost rough storyboard animation to get the timing right, then start adding more and more frames and eventually all the easing in your frame by frame animation should become natural and smooth if you think about it while you're adding inbetweens

Aug. 19, 2009 | 1:48 PM Duchednier responds:

well that's essentially how i work for all of my animations, proportionate stick figures with keys and adding in betweens i mean. Usually this is fine but coming up with epic shots and flow of the action so the fight scenes make sense make it so much more difficult :/

I believe that was quite the run on sentence O.o

his secret:

line tool

Aug. 19, 2009 | 2:47 PM Duchednier responds:

the tool you use to draw the scenes have nothing to do with the angles of which he draws them at. It just means crisper lines

Aug. 19, 2009 | 2:47 PM TheDaveAngle says:

Ryanide is a freaking prodigy at action sequences, shame he hasn't submitted a lot around here lately.

Aug. 19, 2009 | 2:52 PM Duchednier responds:

I know right? i keep tabs on him on deviantart he updates their with WIP's and art pretty often.

Aug. 19, 2009 | 3:42 PM Glunnator says:

Using many different angles is what I usually see to have best effect...
Yeah, I hate making action scenes too... I'm too lazy to start doing sooooo much fbf.
Once I'm doing it it's no problem... But I still haven't made a single successful fight scene.

You look like you're going to, though! Go for it!

Aug. 19, 2009 | 11:50 PM Duchednier responds:

well, if you look at the other chapters of exile, theres at least 1 fight scene in each one, and they're pretty decent. But damn, they take me so long to come up with and then they're just alright, its so hard to make them spectacular.

Aug. 19, 2009 | 3:44 PM Glunnator says:

Oh wait, I didn't say anything helpful, did I? D:

Aug. 19, 2009 | 11:50 PM Duchednier responds:

nah ;)

Aug. 19, 2009 | 4:42 PM Opfyre says:

Don't use stick figures, use roughly sketched outlines of the character. Less time consuming. Focus more on the fight then details. At this point nobody cares about the background. Also, adding shadows isn't imperative the characters are moving so fast it's hard to notice. I like to grab what ever the weapon is, and preform the same stunts (if I can, not jumping off walls into a back flip stuff) to sync my mind in with what I want. Doing this also removes bad positioning in the Flash. All of these things will give you more time to make in-betweens which will improve the look of your animation. Easier? Sort of, definitely less time to create a better looking scene.

Aug. 19, 2009 | 11:52 PM Duchednier responds:

haha, i've deff tried acting out what i want before ;) but then its like "ok, now wheres the camera....god dammit!"

As for the shots, when i say "stick figures" its more of proportionate stick/ball figures occasionally with solid limbs, i'll try to make them more solid limbs from now on though :D

Thanks for the advice :)

Yeah Ryanide is just fucking ridiculous, his action scenes are fantastic and he just never finishes shit.

Aug. 19, 2009 | 11:53 PM Duchednier responds:

lmao, its so true XD

Aug. 19, 2009 | 9:41 PM Kyothine says:

when you're having trouble animating something like a backflip, do it in front of a mirror and remember the way you looked like while you were doing it

and ignore the guy hidden under your bed with a camera in his hand

Aug. 19, 2009 | 11:55 PM Duchednier responds:

Its not a matter of having trouble animating a backflip or any action, if you say animate someone doing a backflip i can do that easy as pie. My problem is coming up with a whole action sequence that looks really cool, is fluid, and easy to understand.

Aug. 19, 2009 | 11:07 PM Cocoon says:

I think you misunderstood me.

Using the line tool means faster production and no loss of motivation when animating large sequences which action scenes take. Although things get more wobbly ect .

For example Hulaloo (who I like for the record)

http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view /504283 (line tool)
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view /506724 (brush tool)

It works if you're doing anime which gives you an excuse to have flailing people ect. Ryanide's work consists of tons of quick movements which is clearly a mimick of the Japenese strict regulation to keep things consistant so not much comic exaggeration is given in the fight scenes. Angles and timing come with practice which if you're doing animation on a fast pace you will hit the mark eventually.

Full bodied detailed characters drawn carefully with the brush tool? Painful and anyone would hate doing it although imo it looks tons stronger than line tool stuff.

Aug. 19, 2009 | 11:59 PM Duchednier responds:

I have a tablet, drawing with the brush tool is definitely much easier and i prefer to both watch it and use it.

the angles and timing are my problem really ;) and deciding what should happen next etc etc.

thanks for the advice though, i'll keep what you said about exaggeration and quick movements and stuff in mind :)

In Russia, action sequences hate you.

Aug. 20, 2009 | 12:15 AM Duchednier responds:

shut up family guy ;)

Aug. 20, 2009 | 12:52 AM Opfyre says:

Buy a camcorder then, cheap and works for this kind of thing. Put it at different angles while you act it and there you go. Don't use the line tool in fight scenes, it just ruins it in my opinion. If it is to sharp it doesn't have that rough blurry effect that fight scenes should have. I don't know if that makes sense, I can only hope it does. Looking forward to Exile IV.

Aug. 20, 2009 | 10:42 AM Duchednier responds:

i actually just thought of an idea that might help me, if not i'll try out the camera thing.

Idea: I've always been good at writing out fight scenes, as i tried to write a few "novels" a long time ago, of course they went nowhere but i learned a bunch from that. So i'm going to attempt to write out a fight scene and then just try to animate that scene for scene, rather than being on a blank flash stage going "hmm..k what happens next"

I'll get back to you if it works ;)

Aug. 20, 2009 | 12:03 PM Bubbowrap says:

Eh, I'm not good at fight scenes myself, so I can't offer much advice. I think one of the guys who posted here was onto something, though. Just drawing quick sketches to get the movement down seems like it'll work. I'm gonna try that.

Aug. 20, 2009 | 3:44 PM Duchednier responds:

right on bro, perhaps we could have epic fight scene discussions if you'd add me on msn ;) mwhaha, sorry now i'm just buggin you.

Aug. 21, 2009 | 12:38 AM Opfyre says:

I'm up for that ^^^^

Aug. 21, 2009 | 4:50 PM Duchednier responds:

Yeah its coming along alright, i think the one part about THIS fight in particular however, is that..they're"RESPONSE EDITED FOR LOLSOME REASONS!"

Wow, you just ruined the whole episode....
Jk, but you did taint the surprise. Sounds awesome, can't wait.

Aug. 24, 2009 | 2:21 AM Duchednier responds:

Mwahah! i've edited it now for the lols, now you're probably the only one that knows ;)

But yeah, it's not even a long fight scene, but I'm thinking i should definitely lengthen it ;)
